Rant: My sister told me her cheap tent held up better than my pricey one in a storm

We were camping near Lake Tahoe last weekend when a surprise thunderstorm rolled in. My sister, who bought a $50 tent from a big box store, stayed completely dry while my $300 'all-weather' tent leaked at the seams. She just said, 'Guess you don't always get what you pay for, huh?' It made me question how much brand names really matter. Has anyone else had a budget piece of gear totally out-perform a fancy one?

Honestly, that's how it goes with so many things now. You pay for the label and the marketing, not always for something that actually works better.

My Coleman from 1998 is still dry, but my new Marmot was a total letdown.

So what brand was your expensive tent? I've heard some of the big outdoor companies have really let their quality slip lately, just coasting on their old reputation.
