Remember when we all thought a heavy tarp was the only way to stay dry? I tried a $12 emergency blanket as a ground sheet last fall in the Adirondacks and it actually worked.

Man I was the same way. I used to buy those heavy duty tarps from the hardware store and thought anything lighter would just rip in five minutes. Then a buddy convinced me to try one of those cheap Mylar blankets on a wet trip in the Smokies and I was dead wrong. That thing held up for the whole weekend without a single tear or puddle leaking through. Now I keep a couple of them in my pack as backups for friends who forget their ground cloth. It's wild how much weight you save too, like a few ounces compared to lugging around that giant folded tarp. Definitely changed my whole setup for the better.
