Shoutout to the guy at the Zion backcountry office who asked if I'd ever actually boiled water in my Jetboil before packing it.
I'd been carrying that thing on every trip for two years, assuming it was ready to go, but the fuel line was completely clogged from never doing a proper test burn at home first.

That "proper test burn" line hits home. I had a brand new filter clog on me miles from any trailhead because I never wet it first. Now my living room floor is a gear explosion before every trip. I boil a pot of water, set up the tent, the whole show. It looks silly but finding a broken buckle at home beats finding it at camp.

Honestly that gear explosion routine sounds like overkill. Testing every little thing at home takes the fun out of it. Part of the adventure is figuring stuff out on the trail, even if it means a little struggle. If you prep for every possible failure you might as well just stay in your living room.

Wait you carried a jetboil for TWO YEARS without ever making hot water? That's next level trust in gear. The whole point of those things is to be the one piece you never worry about. A clogged fuel line is a total trip killer, you got so lucky that ranger called you out.
