The night my stove failed at Lost Lake changed my whole cook setup
I was out near Hood River last fall when my old propane stove fizzled out 20 minutes into dinner, so I ended up using a campfire with a grate I found in the trunk. Has anyone else tried cooking exclusively on coals for a whole trip?

A buddy of mine burned three meals in a row on coals last summer.

Man, I heard a tip from some pitmaster on a podcast that you gotta trust the coals are ready before you even put food on. Once they're all ashy on the outside but still glowing red hot, that's your sweet spot. Sounds like your buddy was rushing it, probably put stuff on while they were still flaming up and got unpredictable heat.
