Waking up less stiff with a simple gear addition

Last trip, my old sleeping bag left me cold and achy. Added a fleece liner and woke up without stiffness. What do you use to improve sleep on the trail?

My buddy Mark slept on a basic foam pad for years and always complained. Last summer he finally upgraded to an insulated inflatable one and said it was like sleeping in his actual bed lol.

But calling it like your actual bed seems a bit much, no?

Yeah that big jump in comfort is real, but saying it's like your actual bed? That's where it loses me. A good insulated pad gets you off the cold ground and adds cushion, but it's still a firm, narrow surface you're on top of. Your bed at home has a soft mattress, probably a topper, lots of blankets, and you can spread out. The pad is just stopping the rocks from poking you, it's not giving you that sink-in cozy feel. It's a world better than foam, but it's its own kind of sleep.
