Warning: That free campsite in the Smokies taught me the hard way about bear bags

I pulled into a spot off the beaten path near Gatlinburg last fall, thought I was being smart by hanging my food in a tree with some old rope. Woke up at 2am to a raccoon chewing through the knot, scattered my granola and canned beans all over the ground. Now I only use a proper bear canister, no matter how short the trip. Anyone else learn a lesson from a night in the woods?

A canister is worth it even for overnight trips.

The bear canister was a game changer for me too after I found a black bear sniffing around my tent at sunrise.
