Got called a bigot for not wanting to donate to a stranger's GoFundMe

This was about 4 months ago at my gym in Cleveland. Some guy I barely knew came up to me after a set and asked me to chip in $50 for his cousin's legal fund cause she got fired for posting something 'problematic' online. I said no, I didn't know her or the story. He said I was 'enabling cancel culture' by not supporting her and that I was 'part of the problem.' I just stood there holding my water bottle. It's wild how people twist not wanting to give strangers money into a moral failing. Has anyone else had someone try to guilt trip you into supporting a cause you knew nothing about?

$50 is a lot to ask from a stranger at the gym, I'd have said no too. It sounds like you were just minding your business and he put you on the spot, which isn't fair.

Actually the guy who asked might be running one of those "social confidence" programs. I seen a video once where this coach paid people to ask strangers for money at the gym just to get over their fear of rejection. So the guy wasn't really trying to borrow $50, he was probably doing some weird exercise. It changes things if you think about it that way. Still awkward to get put on the spot though. But maybe he left feeling more confident even after you said no.
