Got ratioed on Twitter for defending a local bakery and it stung
Tbh, I never thought I'd be the one on the other side of cancel culture, but last Tuesday I jumped into a thread about a small bakery in Austin that got called out for an old insensitive tweet from 2016. I just said something like, "People can grow, why drag this up now?" and within 4 hours I had like 200 replies calling me a bootlicker and a bad person. I was sitting at my kitchen table with my coffee going cold, refreshing the notifications, and honestly my stomach dropped. The bakery didn't even respond, they just deleted their whole account, and I realized I put my own reputation on the line for a place that didn't even care. I ended up deleting my post but the damage was done, a few mutuals unfollowed me over it. Has anyone else gotten caught in the crossfire defending someone and ended up as the villain? What did you do to shake that feeling off?
That line about the coffee going cold while you refresh notifications really got me, because I've been there and it's such a lonely feeling. I got dragged hard a couple years ago for saying a local mechanic deserved a second chance after some dumb thing he posted years back. Lost a friend over it, and the guy never even said thanks, just went quiet like yours did. What helped me was logging off for a few days and remembering that the people piling on don't actually know me. A few mutuals came back around once the mob moved on to the next thing, and the ones who didn't were never really in my corner anyway. You tried to show a little grace, and that says way more about you than 200 angry replies ever will.
