Had a talk with my nephew that shook me up about cancel culture

My 19 year old nephew told me he thinks people who get canceled deserve it 99% of the time because 'they should have known better.' I asked if he thought a 16 year old making an edgy joke 8 years ago should still be fired from their job today and he just shrugged and said 'actions have consequences.' Since when did we stop believing people can change or that context matters at all?

Guess we're all just perfect beings who never made a dumb joke at 16 then. Must be nice living in that alternate reality where your brain is fully baked at puberty.

Yeah and the thing is, @jennifer965 is totally right. We all said dumb stuff as teens. I remember calling a kid a goofball in 9th grade and that was the worst thing I did. But some folks dig up posts from years ago like it's a crime scene. People change. Context matters. If a 16 year old made a dumb joke in 2016, they're not the same person in 2025.

You got the sentiment right but the timeline's a little off. 16 year olds in 2016 are like 25 now, which is actually worse for digging up old posts. A 25 year old getting canceled for something they typed at 16 is even more ridiculous because that's almost a decade of growth.
