Hot take: my old boss in Portland told us to think before we post, and half the crew quit over it
Back in 2019 I worked at a landscaping company in Portland and the owner sat us all down after a customer posted a rant about one of our guys. He said from now on, anything we post online could cost us the job, so think twice. I had two choices: keep my loud opinions and risk my paycheck, or go quiet and keep working. I picked quiet, deleted about 40 old posts that weekend, and honestly it felt like losing a piece of myself. Two guys on the crew refused and got let go within a month. I still wonder if I sold out or just grew up. Anyone else ever had to pick between their mouth and their rent?
Have you noticed this happens everywhere now, not just at work? Teachers tell kids the same thing, churches tell their members, even parents tell their own kids to watch what they say online. It used to be you could have a dumb opinion at a bar and it was gone by morning. Now it follows you forever, and everybody knows it, so we all just keep our mouths shut and nod along. That crew in Portland was really just the small version of what most of us already do every day.
