I called the whole 'you can get fired over old tweets' thing a scare tactic, then it hit my own cousin in Cincinnati
For a couple of years I rolled my eyes every time someone said a boss would dig up your old posts, because who actually goes back that far. Then my cousin got let go from her job at a staffing office in Cincinnati back in March over a tweet she fired off in 2016 when she was 19. She never deleted it, it had like 4 likes, and it sat there for almost 8 years before anyone cared. Somebody screenshotted it and sent it to her regional manager during a pay dispute with the front desk crew. She was gone in 3 days and HR would not even say the tweet out loud during the call. Now I want to know if anyone else has seen an old post come back like that, and did your job actually tell you which one it was or leave you guessing?
A buddy of mine from college got pulled into a meeting last year over a Facebook post he made about a bad breakup in 2014. He worked at a car dealership and someone from a rival lot sent it to his GM. They put him on leave for a week while they "looked into it" and eventually let him come back, but they never showed him the post. He spent that whole week going through 10 years of old statuses trying to figure out which one it was. Ends up it was some dumb joke about hating his ex's new boyfriend. HR still wouldn't confirm it even after he guessed right.
