I got ratio'd for defending a local baker on Twitter

Last month a bakery in Austin got dragged for a pride cake they made, and I jumped in to say people were overreacting. Lost like 200 followers in 2 hours, but the baker DM'd me a free dozen cookies. Has anyone else taken heat just for saying something wasn't cancel-worthy?

The baker DM'd me a free dozen cookies" - see that right there is the part nobody talks about. When you defend someone online and they actually notice, it creates this weird human connection that completely changes the whole thing. I got roasted once for saying a local coffee shop wasn't trying to be offensive with their "late night" sign, but the owner found my comment and now I get free drinks for life. The internet mob never thinks about the actual people behind the accounts they're screaming at. Those 200 followers you lost were probably just bots or trolls anyway, while you got something real out of it. Way better trade than keeping followers who get mad over cake.

@phoenix331 nailed it, that part about "noise" is exactly right. But here's what I'm wondering - do you think those folks who rage-unfollowed even remember doing it? Like, are they scrolling through their feed a week later thinking "whatever happened to that cookie person"? Probably not, right? Meanwhile you're over here getting free cookies from someone who remembers your name. That's the difference between performing online and actually being a decent human. The mob moves on to the next outrage (always, without fail) but the baker still has your DM.

Damn, that's honestly such a good point lol. Those 200 followers were probably just noise anyway if they dipped over a damn cake. Getting free cookies from someone you actually helped is way more valuable than some random people who barely care about you. The internet forgets real humans run these small businesses and they notice when someone has their back. It's crazy how people will scream into the void without thinking about the actual person on the other side getting dragged. You won in the end for real.
