Is it cancel culture or just consequences? The case of that comedian in Portland.
I've been going back and forth on this after a local comic in Portland got dropped from a venue for a joke he told 3 years ago. On one hand, I get that people can change and old jokes don't always age well. But on the other, the venue owner in 2024 has to think about their current audience, not some crowd from 2021. So where's the line between letting someone learn and just holding them accountable for stuff they already said sorry for? Anyone here ever changed your mind on a public figure after they got cancelled?

Three years ago" feels like last week in internet time... I don't know, seems like we're getting real nitpicky about things that barely happened. Is it really that serious to still be upset over a joke from 2021?

Wait, three years ago? That's barely old enough to be a "past joke.

Hold on a second, I gotta push back a little here. Three years ago is definitely old enough to be a "past joke," especially online where stuff moves fast, but I don't think @elizabethg18 was saying it's literally ancient. She was more talking about how these jokes get dug up as if they happened yesterday, which is kinda true for the internet. Plus, a joke from 2021 is not the same as an offensive comment someone made last week, you know? I just think we gotta keep some perspective on timing.
