My cousin told me to just apologize to get the mob off my back but it actually made everything worse

I posted a dumb joke on Twitter last March and when people started piling on, I followed her advice and issued a public apology, but then screenshots of my old edgy tweets from 2016 surfaced and suddenly I was trending locally, so has anyone else found that apologizing just gives cancel culture more fuel?
