My cousin's 5 year boycott over a birthday invite, what's the right call?

My cousin in Ohio refused to talk to me for 5 years because I didn't invite his new gf to my wedding, and my brother says I was wrong to hold my ground since family should get a pass. But I think setting a boundary on plus-ones is fair, am I being too rigid or did I dodge a bullet?
