My old boss in Dayton warned me in 2019 that one angry tweet could sink my side business, and I laughed at him
Back when I ran a little craft business out of my garage, my boss at the time pulled me aside and said I should keep my personal opinions off my business page because "people don't buy from folks they're mad at." I thought he was being dramatic. I had about 200 followers and figured nobody cared what I posted. A few weeks later I vented about a customer who haggled me down to $12 on a $40 order, and I used a word I shouldn't have. Someone screenshotted it and shared it in a local Facebook group with 4,000 members, and for two weeks I got nasty messages from strangers who never bought anything from me. My orders went from around 15 a week to 3, and one regular buyer messaged me saying she couldn't support someone who talked about customers that way. I ended up deleting the whole page and starting over under a new name, which felt like hiding but honestly saved me. Anyone else get warned about this stuff before it actually happened to them, and did you listen or blow it off like I did?
