PSA: That viral cancel culture stat about mob size isn't real

I was scrolling through X last week and saw a post claiming 80% of public callouts come from less than 50 people. Sounded wild so I clicked the source link. It led to some random blog that just made up the number. The real stat I found from a 2023 Pew study said only 15% of adults have ever joined an online pile-on. So that 80% number is basically fear bait. Has anyone else caught fake stats like this being used to stoke cancel culture panic?

Did you check if that "study" was actually from a research firm or just some rando with a graphic design tool? Best trick I learned is to reverse image search the graph if there's one attached, then cross-check the numbers on Google Scholar.

That 80% stat is fear bait. Did the Pew study mention who starts the pile-ons?
