Vent: My old college bar in Austin got a new name and a total makeover after a social media pile-on

I went back to The Hole in the Wall last week, a spot I used to go to all the time, and the sign was gone. The owner told me a tweet from 2018 resurfaced where a former bartender made a bad joke, and it blew up into calls to boycott the place. They felt they had to rebrand the whole thing to 'The Good Spot' and change the menu just to stay open. Has anyone else seen a local business totally change because of something like this?

It's a real shame when a place loses its history over a single old comment. The pressure to rebrand completely must have been huge, and it probably cost them a lot of money. I wonder if the new name and menu will even bring back the old crowd, or if it just feels like a different bar now.

Check if the old regulars actually care about the comment first. We polled our email list before we changed anything and found most people just wanted better nachos, not a whole new name. Saved us a ton on pointless rebranding.

Wait, wasn't the tweet from a customer, not a bartender?
