Warning: My old boss in Portland got fired over a 10-year-old tweet that was just a bad joke.

The company said it was about 'values' but everyone knew it was because a new manager saw it and made a fuss. It really showed me how a single person's complaint can erase a decade of good work. Has anyone else seen a career ended over something that old?

I used to think people should just own their old online posts. Then a guy at my last job, Mark, got let go over a dumb forum comment from 2007. It was just some edgy gaming talk, but HR said it broke their new social media rules. Seeing a good engineer get canned over ancient history made me realize how unfair it is.

Sounds like a massive overreaction to me.

Honestly, that's just brutal. Tbh it feels like we're all living with this permanent record now where nothing is ever really forgotten. It's scary to think a single moment from years ago can wipe out your whole career like that. I really feel for your old boss and for Mark, that's just not right. Seems like companies care more about avoiding any possible fuss than they do about the actual people who work for them.
