Hot take: the banned Ren and Stimpy episode is worse than the banned Cow and Chicken one, and it is not close
Everyone acts like the pulled Ren and Stimpy episode "Man's Best Friend" is the gold standard of banned cartoons, but I sat down and compared it to the Cow and Chicken episode "Buffalo Gals" from 1997 and Cow and Chicken wins easy. "Man's Best Friend" got pulled for the dog abuse scene with George Liquor, but the cartoon is mostly noise, while "Buffalo Gals" got yanked off Cartoon Network after just a handful of airings and the jokes still land 25 years later. One was banned for shock value and one was banned for actually being funny, and people mix those up all the time. Does anyone else think the Ren and Stimpy pull gets way more credit than it deserves?
Growing up with both of these, the Ren and Stimpy one was always about the gross out factor more than the jokes. Buffalo Gals actually had writers room punchlines that held up, which is why it stuck with people who caught it before it got pulled. Shock gets you banned once, funny gets you remembered.
