Never actually thought about using it for carpet stairs before this.

Man, I gotta completely disagree with you on that one. Carpet on stairs is just asking for trouble, especially with kids or pets running around. The wear pattern on the edges gets nasty fast, and cleaning them is a nightmare - you can't just run a vacuum up there like normal carpet. Plus, if you ever trip on a loose edge, that's a trip to the ER waiting to happen. Hardwood or tile with a runner you can actually remove to wash makes way more sense for stairs. I ripped carpet off my stairs two years ago and haven't regretted it once.
