Grocery store carpet made me look twice at seams

I was waiting in line at a Safeway and noticed the carpet near the dairy case had a seam that was starting to fray. It got me thinking about how much foot traffic those retail floors see daily, and I started asking the store manager about it, he said they replace it every 18 months. Has anyone else gone down the retail carpet rabbit hole and found a pattern in how long those installs actually hold up?

Nah, 18 months sounds like corporate spin to me. Those carpets last way longer.

Actually, 18 months makes total sense if you factor in those floor scrubbers they run at 5am, that's what chews up the backing way faster than normal walking does. I've seen store records that show the real killer is the forklift tire marks near the back room, not the customers.
