I finally caved and tried that 'stretched too tight' trick my old boss swore by
My boss Frank from 4 years ago always said I was leaving carpet too loose, especially on stairs. He'd yell 'pull it till you hear the backing crack!' and I'd ignore him thinking he was just old school. Last month I did a job on a set of 12 stairs in a house off Maple Street and got a callback for ripples the very next week. I had to redo the whole thing and Frank's voice was in my head the whole time. Has anyone else had a mentor's advice turn out painfully right after you brushed it off?

Man I saw some contractor on YouTube talking about this exact thing. Said a lot of guys ruin stairs by not going tight enough on the top edge where the carpet meets the riser. Sounds like Frank knew what he was talking about after all.
