Knockoff seam tape almost ruined my job last week
I got a cheap roll of seam tape from a discount supply place outside Nashville to save $12. On a big living room install the tape started curling up after 30 minutes. Had to rip out the whole seam and redo it with good Roberts tape I drive 40 minutes for. Anyone else stopped cutting corners on seam tape yet?

@hayes.jake hit it but here's something nobody brought up yet. The cheap tape might have been a knockoff but the real issue is the adhesive's heat tolerance. I tested a sample from a dollar-store brand once against my heat gun at 170 degrees. It turned into a sticky string mess in under 10 seconds. Roberts tape held fine for almost a minute before any softening. If the glue can't handle a little warmth from the sun coming through windows, you're gambling every time you tuck it under carpet.

That Roberts stuff is pricey but it's the only thing that holds for me too. Was the cheap tape you bought a brand you'd never heard of, or did you just grab the store's generic house brand (which is usually just relabeled junk anyway)? I'm curious if there's a specific manufacturer to avoid, or if it's all the same gamble under $15.
