Pulled up a carpet from a 1980s house in Austin last week and found the nastiest black mold I've ever seen

We were doing a quick tear-out for a rental property near downtown, and the padding just disintegrated when I lifted it. The whole subfloor was wet and covered in black spots. I had to stop the job and call an abatement crew, cost the homeowner an extra $1200. Has anyone else run into hidden moisture problems like this?

Found black mold in my own bathroom once. Wasn't wearing a mask either, dumb move.

You said it was a dumb move not wearing a mask. Honestly that's the least of your worries compared to the bigger issue nobody talks about. The real problem is that black mold spores can get into your clothes and shoes and then spread all over your house. I had a friend who thought she cleaned it up but she didn't wash her jeans right away and had to redo the whole bathroom a week later. Also if you have pets even breathing near black mold can cause serious lung problems for them. So next time throw away anything fabric that touched the mold area.
