Tack strip direction made my first diagonal install way easier
Had a 12x14 room in a split level where the subfloor ran the opposite way from what I usually do, so I had to pick between laying the tack strip parallel to the joists or angling it for a diagonal pattern. I went diagonal since the homeowner wanted that look, and honestly the seams lined up way smoother than I expected. Anyone else try a 45 degree layout and have trouble with the tack strip corners or was it just me?

The part about the seams lining up smoother is what got me. It reminds me of how when you cut a sandwich diagonally, the pieces just fit together better in the Tupperware, even though it's the same amount of bread. I think the 45 degree thing works because it spreads the pressure out, like how a zipper on a jacket never gets stuck when you pull it at an angle instead of straight on. Corners were a small headache for me on my first diagonal job, but I found that scoring the tack strip with a utility knife before bending it saved a ton of time. It's funny how the same trick works for drywall tape and even wrapping presents, anything that has to turn a corner just behaves better when you give it a little head start. So yeah, the diagonal choice is the smart one, even if the corners test your patience.
