TIL my model train hobby changed how I do carpet seams

For years, the crew always said a knee kicker is the only way to get seams right. But from my model train builds, I learned that slow, careful pressure works better than force. Now I use a small hand roller and focus on tiny adjustments, which gives me cleaner lines. My buddies think I'm wasting time, but my jobs look sharp and hold up. Maybe we don't always need the loudest tools on the truck.

Why do so many experts dismiss gentle methods? I remember a book on woodworking that said fine adjustments with hand tools prevent splits that power tools cause. Your slow roller technique matches that. It's like setting a fragile model part where force cracks it but patience seats it right. My old boss always argued for finesse over muscle in finish work. Your seams holding up proves his point.

But don't some experts actually champion gentle methods for finish work?

My dad’s old woodshop teacher always said gentle taps set joints better than hammering.
