Vent: a rep from the mill told me carpet gets walked on 800,000 times a year, and now I can't stop thinking about it
So I was at a supplier demo in Tulsa back in March and the guy from the mill threw out a number that stuck in my head. He said in a normal home, one hallway gets about 800,000 footfalls a year, and in a busy office entry it can hit over a million. I always knew traffic lanes wear out first but I never put a number on it. That means when a customer calls me 3 months in about a fuzzy path from the front door to the kitchen, they are not crazy, that spot just got hammered. I started warning people about it now and tell them a decent pad plus a runner buys them a couple extra years. Any of you ever hear a stat from a rep that you still use on customers to this day?
That 800k number sounds good in a demo but reps love big scary stats. A hallway doesn't get 800,000 steps unless a family of five is doing laps all day. Real homes are more like 3,000 to 8,000 steps a day in the main path, which is way less than a million. The wear you see at 3 months is usually a junk carpet or bad install, not just feet.
