My uncle in Dayton told me to skip the $9 deli sandwich and hit the taqueria two blocks over instead
I figured he was just being cheap when he waved me off from the Sub shop near his place on Third Street. That $6 al pastor plate ended up being twice the food and I've been back 7 times in 3 weeks. So now I gotta ask, what spot did somebody put you onto that you blew off at first?
I read this whole thread about cheap eats a while back and somebody said the best meal of their life came from a gas station taco counter they almost drove past. That stuck with me because my barber kept telling me to try this little Vietnamese spot behind the laundromat and I kept putting it off, figured it was just hype. Finally went last month and the banh mi was like three bucks and better than stuff I've paid triple for. The bread alone was worth the trip, crispy on the outside and soft inside, and the pork had this char on it that I still think about. Now I'm mad I waited so long. Those little hole in the wall places always know what they're doing, they just don't need a sign to prove it.
