Free picnic day turned into a $60 lesson about park geese

Last Saturday I packed sandwiches and a blanket for what was supposed to be a zero dollar afternoon at the park near my place. We sat by the pond, and this one goose kept walking closer. I figured it was harmless, geese are everywhere right? Then it grabbed my whole bag of chips and ran off with it, and three more geese swarmed us. We packed up fast but not before they tore into the bread bag too. Cost me nothing upfront, but I spent $60 at the grocery store after to replace the food and buy a proper cooler with a latch. Has anyone else had a cheap outing wrecked by animals acting bold? What do you bring now to keep them away?
