My magnetic sweep head failed on a flat roof job in Toledo

Last Tuesday I was doing a routine clean on a two-story colonial and my magnetic sweep head just lost its pull halfway through the flue. The magnet cracked inside the housing, no warning at all, and I had to fish out a dropped damper plate blind with a claw tool for 45 minutes. Everyone I talk to swears by those magnetic heads for catching screws and debris, but I think they are overrated for real soot conditions. A plain bristle brush with a good vacuum setup does the same job without the risk of a sudden failure on a 30 foot ladder. Am I the only one who ditched magnetic heads and went back to basics after a bad break like this?
