NFPA says over 25,000 chimney fires happen in the US every year and that number stuck with me
I was flipping through the NFPA home fire reports after a slow Tuesday and saw that stat, roughly 25,000 chimney fires a year nationwide. Most of them trace back to creosote buildup and unseasoned wood, which is basically our whole job in one line. I started leaving a one page printout with customers in Cedar Rapids after every sweep and a few have called back saying they finally get why yearly cleaning matters. Does anyone else hand out written info like that, or do you just talk it through at the door?
I used to just talk at the door and figure people would remember it, but that almost never worked. The printout thing really does stick with people, mostly because they can look at it again when they're standing in front of a cold fireplace months later. Leaving something behind changes how much they actually take in.
