You said it's an "eyesore that also technically functions," but that's not really how good craft works. If your shelf is crooked, it's not doing its job right even if things don't fall off. The point of making something both pretty and useful is that it needs to be built well first. A shelf that's not level shows the supports are wrong. True function includes looking right, otherwise it's just a broken thing you haven't fixed yet.

Totally get that. My last DIY attempt to make something both pretty and useful was a disaster. Tried to build a little corner shelf, you know, for plants. It holds things up, but wow is it crooked. Kind of an eyesore that also technically functions, my specialty.
