Stopped at a cafe in Saratoga Springs and counted 5 dirty flues from one window
I was up in Saratoga Springs visiting my sister a few weeks back and we grabbed coffee at this little place on Broadway. The window seat faced a row of old Victorians, and I kid you not, I could spot 5 flues from that one chair that clearly had not seen a brush in a long time. Two of them had that black crusty cap and one was even puffing a little smoke into the rain. My sister thinks I am nuts for noticing, but that view honestly made me want to knock on doors. Any of you ever catch yourself sizing up a town's chimneys while you are supposed to be on vacation?
Man, I know that feeling way too well. My wife dragged me to a wedding in Cooperstown last summer and I spent half the reception staring at the roof lines across the street instead of dancing, counting at least three caps that were clearly shot. What worked for me was just taking phone pics from wherever I was and then looking them up later when I got home, since you can pull up the address on the county tax site and figure out who owns the place. I never actually knocked on any doors, but I did mail a couple of friendly notes with my card after one trip and got two callbacks out of it, so that might be worth a shot next time you are up that way. Saratoga has a ton of those old places too, so I bet half of them are overdue and the owners just have no idea.
