That one time an old timer showed me the wire brush trick

Honestly, I was sweeping a flue in an old Victorian house in Richmond last Tuesday, totally stuck on a heavy creosote buildup. This 70 year old retired sweep, Mr. Dave, happened to be passing by and saw my rig outside. He just leaned in, pointed at my brush, and said, 'you're fighting the wrong side of that flue, kid'. He showed me how to angle the wire brush at 45 degrees to break up the glaze, and it cleared out in like 10 minutes. Has anyone else had a random stranger on the job teach them something simple that changed their whole approach?

Ain't it wild how the old guys just know things like that?

Man, that's a solid trick to have handed to you like that.

Actually, that trick only works on certain models from like 2010 to 2014. I tried it on my buddy's 2016 and it just made a weird grinding noise, almost stripped something. The older guys probably know it because those engines had a specific weak spot that needed that kind of fix. Newer ones have different tolerances and you can really mess up the timing chain if you're not careful. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of trying it on a later year.
