The old sweep in Boston told me to look at the roof line before I even pull out a brush
I was up in Beacon Hill last Tuesday doing a routine job on a rowhouse built around 1890. Before I even unloaded my gear, the guy training me pointed at a crack in the crown of the chimney and said that's where the water gets in, not the flue. Sure enough, I ran my camera down and found a whole shelf of spalling brick about 4 feet below the cap that no one had touched in decades. The homeowner said three other sweeps just ran a rod through and called it clean. Do you guys always check the stack from the roofline first, or am I late to this one?
