Update: I switched from a basic brush to a SootMaster rotary system
The choice was between sticking with my old rods or investing in a full rotary kit. I picked the rotary, and it cut my time on a standard flue in Tacoma down by almost half. Anyone have tips on keeping the drive cable from binding in older masonry?

Ever try heating the cable a bit with a heat gun before you run it? Makes it more flexible in cold mortar.

My old SootMaster 2000 cable used to jam in pre-war brick chimneys all the time. I found soaking the last three feet in light oil overnight before a job made a huge difference. It just slides through the old mortar joints way better.

Honestly, the binding in old mortar is the worst part. I keep a spray bottle with a mix of water and a little dish soap in my truck, a quick squirt down the flue before I start really helps it slide. That old grit just gums things up less when it's wet.
