Worst Tuesday ever turned into a goldmine of masonry insight

Spent 6 hours on a chimney in Portland where the flue tiles were shattered from an old fire, then the homeowner showed me a photo of the original 1920s construction that explained exactly why. Has anyone else had a job go sideways only to learn something that saved you time on the next three?

Man oh man, that sounds like a rough day but man what a payoff! I've definitely had jobs that kicked my butt but then the homeowner drops some old knowledge that makes it all worth it. Once had a foundation wall that kept cracking until they dug up a photo of the original dirt grade that showed we were fighting a hidden spring. That bit of info saved me from redoing the same fix twice. Your chimney story is a good reminder that sometimes the bad days are just the universe teaching you something for the next one.
