Farmers market stalls throw away more food than I thought
Helped break down a stall in Des Moines last Saturday and watched the guy toss a full crate of slightly bruised heirloom tomatoes into the dumpster. I asked why not donate or compost, and he said the pickup times don't match his selling hours, plus paying for compost bins eats his margin. That crate was maybe 40 pounds, and if even half the vendors do this weekly across the city, that's a ton of waste per market season. Has anyone convinced a market to share a collective compost drop-off or connected stalls with local food banks that take same-day leftovers?

My buddy tried this with a local market, the vendors just shrugged it off.
