Had to pick between a heat pump and new windows before winter, went with the heat pump in October
Live in Duluth and my furnace was on its last legs, got two quotes in September. Heat pump install came to $11,400 after the rebates, windows were gonna run $14k and my guy said theyd take 6 to 8 weeks to even come in. Went heat pump so I wouldnt be stuck with space heaters in January. First real cold snap hit in December and the thing ran fine down to about 5 degrees, below that the backup strips kicked on and my bill jumped. Still glad I picked it but now Im wondering if I shouldve done the windows first and just limped the old furnace one more year. Anyone else had to pick one upgrade over the other? What did you go with and did it pay off?
The backup strips kicking on below 5 degrees and your bill jumping? Sounds like the heat pump and the old furnace had a little agreement to keep you humble either way. But hey, at least you weren't the guy on the news doing the space heater shuffle across the living room come January. Windows can wait another year, they don't call your name at 2am when it's 20 below.
