Hit 1,000 miles on my bike commute this year and didn't even realize it
was checking my bike computer last night to see if I needed a new chain and saw the odometer roll past 1,000 miles. I only started biking to work back in April because gas was getting expensive. But I kept going even after prices dropped. That works out to about 40 miles a week just going back and forth. Not huge compared to some people here but it means I skipped about 50 gallons of gas. Anyone else track their mileage and get surprised by the total?

Wow, 500 miles? That seems a little aggressive unless you're riding through mud and salt every day. I've got a cheap chain on my old commuter and I just lube it when it starts squeaking. It's probably way past due but it still shifts fine. I guess if you race or something it matters, but for puttering to work and back, I bet you could double that before you notice anything. The odometer thing is neat though, sneaking up on a milestone like that.
