Hot take: My neighbor's comment about my 12 tomato plants got me into composting
Last Saturday I was hauling bags of store bought soil across my yard in Boise when my neighbor Dale leaned over the fence and asked why I was paying for dirt when my kitchen makes it for free. I laughed it off, but he walked me through his setup: one bin, a lid he drilled holes in, and about 4 months of scraps. I started my own pile 3 weeks ago with coffee grounds, eggshells, and grass clippings, and it is already shrinking down to something that looks like soil. My tomato plants are still small, but I have not bought a single bag of dirt since, which saves me around $15 each time I used to run to the store. Dale checks on my bin every few days like it is a pet, and honestly the whole thing keeps food waste out of the landfill too. Has anyone else had a neighbor talk them into a habit like this, and how long did yours take before it actually looked like dirt?
