My neighbor's compost pile made me see my trash can differently
I used to think composting was just for people with big yards, until my neighbor Frank showed me his setup last spring. He lives in the same small duplex as me in Portland, and he has this neat little bin on his patio. He told me, 'This thing keeps about 200 pounds of food scraps out of the landfill every year from just my kitchen.' That number really stuck with me. I started with a small countertop bin, and now I drop my scraps at the community garden. It's been 8 months, and I barely fill my regular trash can anymore. Has anyone else started with a small space and found it easier than they thought?

My old apartment in Seattle had a compost bin and it still smelled pretty bad on hot days... maybe it was just a bad setup.

Ever notice how it cuts down on trash smells?

My building in Chicago made us switch to compost bins last year. I was sure it would make things worse. But our hallway trash room actually smells way less now. The food waste gets picked up twice a week so it's gone fast. I was totally wrong about it.
