Vent: I spent $800 on a home energy audit that basically just told me to add more attic insulation.
On one side, the detailed report gave me a clear action plan, but on the other, I feel like I paid a huge premium for advice I could have gotten for free from my utility company's basic program, so what's the real value of these premium audits?

Did you get a blower door test done too?

Did they check for air leaks around your windows and doors? That's where a good audit earns its money. Finding those drafts is a skill, and fixing them can make a bigger difference than just adding insulation. A free program might miss the specific spots causing your biggest heat loss. You paid for someone to find your home's real weak points, not just give general advice.

Ugh, tell me about it. My "free" audit a few years back was basically a guy walking around for ten minutes before handing me a pamphlet for insulation. Paid for a real one last fall and they found a huge gap under my front door I never even felt. Totally different level of detail.
