Warning: found out my town sends 40 percent of recycling to the landfill
I was poking around my city's public works page last week and found a PDF that said 40 percent of what goes in our blue bins here in Fort Wayne ends up buried anyway. Glass is the worst one, they crush it and use it as landfill cover. So all those months of rinsing jars and peeling labels did almost nothing. Does anyone know how to check if their own city actually recycles what they collect?
Learned this the hard way when my neighbor got all worked up about our bins and started a whole facebook group about it. He drove his glass to a drop off spot two towns over for like six months, felt real good about himself. Then he found out that place was just stockpiling it in a lot behind their building because they lost their buyer. He still rinses everything though, so I guess the habit stuck. Your best bet is calling the public works office and asking for the actual end market for each thing you toss in, not the pickup schedule. If they can't tell you where the glass goes after they crush it, that tells you plenty right there.
