I ran a job on a Haas VF-2 and a Doosan DNM 4500 back to back. The difference in finish quality on the 316 stainless part was NOT subtle.

Depends on the operator, not the machine.

But what about when the machine itself limits what the operator can do? A bad driver in a great car can still crash, but a great driver in a car with bald tires and bad brakes is in real trouble. Where do you draw the line between skill and having the right tools?

Exactly, you can't show skill if the gear is actively fighting you. Saw a guy try to win a race with a grocery cart once, same idea.
