Just found out how much a single worn ball screw can cost a shop

I was reading an old maintenance log from a machine we got second hand. The previous owner noted they replaced a ball screw on a 2008 VMC after 40,000 hours of runtime, and the part alone was over $4,200. I always knew they were expensive, but seeing that exact number for a common machine really hit home. It makes all those little checks for backlash and weird noises feel way more important now. Has anyone else had a major component fail and been shocked by the repair bill?

Sometimes you just gotta run it till it breaks, like @simonb92's old AC.

That's a brutal number to see on paper. Makes preventative maintenance feel cheap.

Our last AC unit replacement cost $8k, so we get it serviced every spring now.
