Pro tip: a guy in Wichita taught me to check my tailstock alignment with a $6 dial indicator, and I've caught 3 crash setups since
Ran into an old machinist at a supply shop in Wichita back in April while I was picking up inserts, and he asked why I was buying shims. I told him my parts kept coming out tapered on the OD and I figured it was tool wear. He walked me over to his truck, pulled out a cheap dial indicator, and showed me how to sweep the tailstock quill against a chucked bar in about two minutes. Mine was off by .011 over 6 inches and I'd been chasing it with tool offsets for weeks. Now I check that sweep every Monday morning before the first setup, and it has saved me from at least 3 scrapped runs. Anybody else got a cheap check like this that catches problems before the first part?
