Pro tip: I used to eyeball my tool offsets for every job in my old shop in Dayton.

After scrapping a $500 part last month, I started writing them down on a checklist before each run. How do you guys keep your setup notes organized?

Used to wing it too until a scrap pile taught me a lesson. Now I keep a dedicated notebook by the machine.

My scrap pile could probably build a second machine at this point. It took me three identical mistakes before the notebook idea finally stuck. The worst part is I'd remember the fix, just not until the next time I set up the job. Now my notebook looks like a kindergartener's scribble pad, but it saves so much headache. Writing it down right away is the only thing that works for my forgetful brain.

Honestly that scrap pile method of learning is way too real. Tbh my brain works the same way where the solution pops into my head about five minutes after I've already ruined the part. Ngl my own notes are a mess of bad drawings and half words that only make sense to me, but it beats wasting more material. Feels like paying the stupid tax over and over until you finally write it down.
