The old timer's feed rate advice that backfired on a 4140 job

A retired guy named Ron who used to run a Bridgeport told me to crank the feed rate way up on a 4140 part to save cycle time. I tried it on a 3-inch deep pocket last Tuesday and the insert chipped at about 40 percent through the pass. He swore by that trick from his shop in Ohio, but my machine is a 15-year-old Haas with less torque than his old iron. Maybe his advice worked for his setup, but it cost me a $18 insert and 2 hours of cleanup. Anyone else got a trusted tip that totally failed on newer equipment?
